Granite vs. ColorCore: Which Routed Sign Material is Right for You?

In the world of routed signs, trends come and go, but quality materials always stand the test of time. Recently, we’ve seen a growing trend in the use of ColorCore plastic for routed signs, thanks to its versatile look and cost. ColorCore is a multi-layered material with two matching colored outer layers and a contrasting inner layer designed to be revealed during CNC routing. Typically this carving will be filled with a colored resin or printed vinyls. This is in contrast to the classic look of carved stone signs. The stone signs use a technique called sandblasting to reveal the artwork provided. Once the design is carved it will be painted with long lasting, weather resistant paint.

We believe that each option has its benefits and ultimately,  the benefits will vary from course to course. Heres why we think granite is the best option for the majority of golf courses.

Durability

ColorCore plastic is a durable material for outdoor signs, but like most plastics, it can wear down over time. When exposed to UV light, extreme weather conditions, or high-traffic areas colors may fade fade or crack, requiring replacement sooner than you might expect. The material has been know to warp in the heat over time as well, but is a great option for a shorter term.

In contrast, granite is virtually indestructible. Its natural resistance to weathering, scratching, and fading makes it the ideal material for long-term installations. Granite,  or other stone signs can last decades without losing their visual appeal or structural integrity. Likely, the only damage a granite sign will be exposed to is a golfer who maybe shouldn’t be trusted driving a golf cart.

Aesthetic Appeal

ColorCore offers bright, modern color contrasts with a clean, uniform finish, which is ideal for a more contemporary, sleek look. The CNC routing reveals the inner layer color, adding an eye-catching detail. However, the finish can sometimes look artificial, and over time, the colors may dull or fade.

Stone, on the other hand, exudes timeless elegance. It has a naturally sophisticated appearance, and its textures and unique patterns provide a one-of-a-kind aesthetic. Granite signs can be polished to a high shine or left with a more natural, rustic finish, making them adaptable to both modern and classic environments.

Maintenance

With ColorCore signs, maintenance is relatively low, but once the layers start to deteriorate, there’s little that can be done besides replacing the sign. Over time, scratches and dings can also show more readily on plastic surfaces, affecting the overall look.

Stone requires minimal maintenance, with occasional cleaning keeping it looking brand new. Its inherent toughness means it resists damage from debris, weather, and even vandalism. Granite signs often look just as good 10 years down the line as they did on day one.

Cost vs. Value

So what is the best option for your golf course?

When choosing between ColorCore plastic and granite for your routed signs, think about the purpose, location, and desired aesthetic of your sign. ColorCore might be a good fit if you’re looking for something temporary, cost-effective, and vibrant. However, if you want a sign that can weather the elements, maintain its beauty for decades, and provide timeless elegance, granite is the clear winner. At GG Markers, we’re passionate about creating signage that not only looks great but also stands the test of time.
